Deep X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of cluster cores

Jeremy Sanders, Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge

Using deep Chandra and XMM observations of galaxy clusters we can learn a great deal about the feedback processes operating between the central AGN and surrounding intracluster medium. I examine a megasecond observation of the Perseus cluster and discuss the mechanisms and energetics of heating and cooling in that cluster. I also use deep XMM-Newton grating observations of the Centaurus and other clusters to quantify how much cool X-ray emitting gas is present in the centres of these objects.
